While our name may lead you to believe we
are transplanted aliens from a distant planet, we are
instead the local chapter of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization of
executives and professionals dedicated to advancing the status of women.
A group of five women, led by of Marian
de Forest, a prominent journalist, playwright and civic leader,
organized the first Zonta Club in Buffalo, NY in 1919. In 1930, with
the creation of the Zonta Club of Vienna, Austria, Zonta expanded its
influence into Europe and today Zonta International is a network of
33,000 members in 1,200 clubs in 68 countries.
Through service, advocacy and education
on local and global levels, Zonta International continues to be a leader
in the area of women's equal rights--promoting economic
self-sufficiency, political equality, access to education and health
services, and the prevention of violence against women and children.
The Zonta Club of Howard County was
chartered in 1998. The Club has provided scholarship money for community
college students, seasonal gifts for individuals with special needs, and
guidance for women returning to the workforce. The Club’s financial
contributions have assisted Zonta International in meeting its national
and international goals.
In addition to the Club’s outreach
activities, Zontians benefit from developing mutually beneficial
relationships with other professionals, enjoying opportunities for
educational seminars and workshops in leadership and organizational
skills, participating in fundraising events, traveling to meet Zontians
across the world, and expanding their knowledge of issues of vital
interest to women
